Coffee is my mama fuel.

Hi Friends!

I’m Heather aka The Lifeschooler. I’ve been homeschooling for 9 years now.

The thought of homeschooling never crossed my mind before I had children. The plan was that our children would go to daycare and then onto public school while I taught. This plan was interrupted when I transferred from Tennessee down to a Metro-Atlanta school district during the “Great Recession”. There were few job openings and a lot of applicants for those few opportunities. This led to me becoming a stay-at-home mom which changed out whole outlook on how we wanted our family raised.

When my first born was an infant, I realized that I wanted to homeschool after listening to a long conversation between to moms who intended to homeschool. Their reasons for homeschooling made SO much sense. My husband and I discussed it thoroughly and decided that homeshooling was something that we wanted to do. In that moment, we became a homeschool family.

A Little About My Credentials

I have my B.S. in Early Childhood Education (Prek-5th). I graduated back in 2005 (which seems like a lifetime ago). I was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi which is an honor’s society for educators before I graduated. I also received “Excellence Awards” for my Praxis test scores. I taught in my hometown school district before moving to Georgia where I continued to work in the public school system as a long-term substitute until I gave birth to my first child.

A Little Bit About My Educational Philosophy

My philosophy has changed slightly as I moved from teaching in the public school system to home education and tutoring homeschoolers. It is the following:

My duty as an educator is to meet every child where they are. There is absolutely no reason to compare children. Everyone is different and unique. Start where a child is developmentally and move forward from there at a pace that meets the child’s needs. In addition, children should be taught how to find answers and how to figure out answers verses just how to memorize. Giving children the ability to think beyond just one question sets them up for unlimited success where teaching children how to memorize sets them up for limitations. Everyone has a gift. My job is to find that gift and nurture it while balancing that gift with knowledge to set them up for overall success. If I am successful with all that is stated then I will meet my ultimate goal- fostering a love of learning.
